Southland Sod Farm

Marathon I - (Evergreen Sod)

Marathon® combines the best of both worlds in terms of beauty and durability. It is a 100% tall fescue blend of both the Hubbard 87 and Baja varieties both of which are exclusive to Southland Sod Farms, and the result of multiple generations of selective breeding. Primary selection criteria were dark color, dense crown, disease resistance and fine leaf texture. Hubbard 87 has been ranked #1 in overall Turf Quality in the USDA-sponsored National Turfgrass Evaluation Program for three consecutive years.

Marathon II - (Evergreen Sod)

Marathon II is our most advanced dwarf tall fescue. It retains the excellent durability of the species while enhancing its beauty. Marathon II can be mowed shorter, has greater density, and slightly narrower leaves, resulting in a more compact carpet-like appearance. The growth rate is somewhat slower, particularly in winter. Marathon II contains Encore®, a second-generation dwarf (sometimes termed "double dwarf"), and is a proprietary variety developed exclusively for Southland Sod Farms and the Southern California market area. Primary selection criteria were short mature growth, compact dense crown, dark color, disease resistance, and leaf texture.

Marathon III - Evergreen Sod)

Marathon III is Southland Sod's most advanced dwarf tall fescue and represents the latest release in a fifteen-year progression of breeding development. Marathon III is more dense, darker green, finer leafed, and slower growing than previous generations. Marathon III can be mowed shorter, resulting in a more compact carpet-like appearance its slower growth rate results in significantly lower clipping yield which, in turn, lowers disposal volume. Mowing frequency may also be reduced, particularly during cooler seasons. Marathon III contains Shortcut™ which is Southland's proprietary variety developed through a cooperative research program

Pureblue - (Evergreen Sod)

Pureblue Improved elite bluegrass blend. Dense, elegant appearance. Medium-fine texture. Requires regular care to maintain refined appearance. Ryeblue - (Evergreen Sod)

Ryeblue 80% Pureblue and 20% Perennial Rye. Very similar to Pureblue, with subtle differences (slightly lighter color, overall glossier appearance). Slightly higher disease resistance than Pureblue. Also green year-round

Greenwave - (Evergeen Sod)

GreenWave is a creeping red fescue. This species is often seen on unmowed slopes. It can also be used in any ornamental area where a mounding ground cover effect is desired. It is relatively shade tolerant.

St. Augustine - (Dormant in Winter)

St. Augustine very coarse thick-stemmed runners. Used primarily where shade tolerance is the top priority. Native to the southern United States where humid conditions do not permit cool-season lawn varieties to flourish. Considerable thatching requires concrete borders for containment. Dormant in winter.

Tifgreen Bermuda - (Dormant in Winter)

Tifgreen Hybrid Bermuda. Excellent as athletic field or recreational turf. Often used on golf course putting greens. Very dense, low-growing, fine textured. Creates an attractive "manicured" look with consistent care and trimming. Develops thatch requires concrete borders for containment. Becomes dormant in winter.

Lite Sod

Lite Sod is our name for a sod production process technically known as “substrate.” The sod is grown on a bed of composted green waste spread about 1/2″ thick on a plastic barrier sheet. As the grass grows, the barrier forces the roots laterally thus forming a naturally interwoven mat. The sod weights about half as much as field grown sod, hence the name “Lite Sod.”
