Southland Sod Farms
Southland Evergreen Sod
Marathon® combines the best of both worlds in terms of beauty and durability. It is a 100% tall fescue blend of both the Hubbard 87 and Baja varieties both of which are exclusive to Southland Sod Farms, and the result of multiple generations of selective breeding. Primary selection criteria were dark color, dense crown, disease resistance and fine leaf texture. Hubbard 87 has been ranked #1 in overall Turf Quality in the USDA-sponsored National Turfgrass Evaluation Program for three consecutive years.
Marathon II is our most advanced dwarf tall fescue. It retains the excellent durability of the species while enhancing its beauty. Marathon II can be mowed shorter, has greater density, and slightly narrower leaves, resulting in a more compact carpet-like appearance. The growth rate is somewhat slower, particularly in winter. Marathon II contains Encore®, a second-generation dwarf (sometimes termed "double dwarf"), and is a proprietary variety developed exclusively for Southland Sod Farms and the Southern California market area. Primary selection criteria were short mature growth, compact dense crown, dark color, disease resistance, and leaf texture.
Marathon III is Southland Sod's most advanced dwarf tall fescue and represents the latest release in a fifteen-year progression of breeding development. Marathon III is more dense, darker green, finer leafed, and slower growing than previous generations. Marathon III can be mowed shorter, resulting in a more compact carpet-like appearance; its slower growth rate results in significantly lower clipping yield which, in turn, lowers disposal volume. Mowing frequency may also be reduced, particularly during cooler seasons. Marathon III contains Shortcut™ which is Southland's proprietary variety developed through a cooperative research program.
Pureblue Improved elite bluegrass blend. Dense, elegant appearance. Medium-fine texture. Requires regular care to maintain refined appearance. Does best in moderate coastal areas; avoid using in inland valleys and warm, arid regions. Requires well-drained soil; does not tolerate salinity. Green year-round.
Ryeblue 80% Pureblue and 20% Perennial Rye. Very similar to Pureblue, with subtle differences (slightly lighter color, overall glossier appearance). Slightly higher disease resistance than Pureblue. Also green year-round.
Dichondra a specialty lawn with a distinctive, round-leafed texture. A low- growing ground cover, commonly used with stepping stones or in oriental garden settings to create an elegant effect. Good for use in partial shade and/or where mowing is difficult. Not recommended for traffic areas, does not tolerat salinity. Requires well-drained soil and constant care. Green year-round.
Southland Winter Dormant Sod
St. Augustine very coarse thick-stemmed runners. Used primarily where shade tolerance is the top priority. Native to the southern United States where humid conditions do not permit cool-season lawn varieties to flourish. Considerable thatching; requires concrete borders for containment. Dormant in winter.
Tifgreen Hybrid Bermuda. Excellent as athletic field or recreational turf. Often used on golf course putting greens. Very dense, low-growing, fine textured. Creates an attractive "manicured" look with consistent care and trimming. Develops thatch; requires concrete borders for containment. Becomes dormant in winter.
El Toro Zoysia
El Toro Zoysia a dense creeping grass similar to Tifgreen with a taller mowing height (1" to 2"). Texture is medium-fine. Color is comparatively light green. Develops thatch; requires concrete borders for containment. Subject to a longer winter dormancy than Tifgreen or St. Augustine.
Zoysia Tenuifolia a finer-textured ornamental grass with a unique, rolling appearance; typically used in oriental garden settings or as ground cover. Usually left unmowed for a free-form, natural look. Extremely slow growing. Dormant in winter.
West Coast Turf
The New Generation of Tall Fescue
West Coast Turf’s exclusive West Coaster sod makes for the ultimate lawn! The finest quality semi-dwarf tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass is merged together in just the right ratios to provide the highest turf quality available. West Coaster has a beautiful dark green color, with lasting wear, drought, and heat tolerance, and excellent disease resistance. It can also tolerate partial shade, and is ideal for home lawns, landscapes, and parks. It performs well in coastal California, as well as cool inland valley and high desert environments. West Coaster Seed is available for easy repairs.
Stadium Quality Sod for Home and Landscape
Bull’s-Eye Bermuda (also known as BOBSod in Arizona) offers the most beautiful blue-green color and best shade tolerance of all the bermudas. It combines the beautiful color of bluegrass, the texture and feel of zoysiagrass, and the durability of Tifway. Bull’s-Eye is exceptionally tough, has virtually no seed heads, and resists scalping.
For the manicured look
Tifgreen 328’s wide range of mowing heights, and low, dense growth habit make it one of the most versatile hybrid bermudas. Tifgreen combines very fine texture with beautiful green color. It overseeds well, and has fewer pest and disease problems than cool-season grasses
The proven favorite
Old-Line Tifdwarf with its fine texture and tolerance of close mowing, West Coast Turf’s “Old-Line” Tifdwarf has been the most popular greens-quality hybrid bermuda for the last 40 years. It offers fast putting speeds and true ball roll for high performance, comparable to many bentgrass greens. “Old-Line” Tifdwarf is more compact and finer bladed than Tifgreen, needs less maintenance than TifEagle, takes overseeding well, and recovers quickly from injury.
CHAPARRAL 100 % RYE
Strong Density and Low Growth
Chaparral 100% Rye with its excellent durability, fine texture, and great wear tolerance, West Coast Turf’s 100% rye is the sod-of-choice for classic all rye golf courses. Because it can tolerate close mowing, it is perfect for creating contrasts in texture. It also exhibits strong density.
DE ANZA ZOYSIA
Wear and shade tolerant
De Anza Zoysia accepting of shade, heat, drought, saline soils, and close mowing, De Anza zoysia also has the blue-green color of bluegrass, and fine, firm texture. It offers the fastest coverage, and greatest wear tolerance of West Coast Turf’s zoysiagrasses. De Anza requires less maintenance and stays green longer into the fall than other types of warm-season grasses.
HILLSIDE FINE FESCUE
Ultimate Low Maintenance
West Coast Turf’ Hillside Fine Fescue is the ultimate low maintenance, cool season turfgrass. This fine fescue is a three-way mix of Florentine GT Strong Creeping Red Fescue, Seabreeze GT Slender Creeping Red Fescue, and Tiffany Chewings Fescue.
Florentine has strong rhizomes to provide a spreading compact growth habit that will quickly fill in weak or damaged areas. It also has improved salt tolerance as compared to other strong creeping fescues on the market.
Seabreeze has a bright green color with great density, aggressive growth, and good color during winter months. It also has excellent salt tolerance compared to most fine fescues.
Tiffany is the most competitive of the three species. With a bright medium-green color, it tillers rapidly providing strong springtime turf quality.
When mixed together, these three fine-leafed fescues provide a dense, low growing, fine textured turf with low fertility requirements. In cooler, more temperate climates, ,fine fescues perform well in full sun to moderately heavy shade. In warmer transition climates, they perform best when shaded from the heat of the afternoon sun.
Hillside fine fescue can endure a broad range of mowing heights. If left un-mowed, it takes on a beautiful natural look.
Hybrid Seashore Paspalum
Sea Spray is the first seeded hybrid seashore paspalum available as both seed and sod. Sea Spray is an extremely salt tolerant turfgrass, exhibiting outstanding turf quality, a bright green color, and a beautiful, uniform appearance. Ideal for temperate to hot, humid coastal climates, Sea Spray also affords excellent drought tolerance, and good shade tolerance. It is excellent for use on areas irrigated with effluent water, or subject to naturally high saline conditions.
Stays greener longer
Tifway II bermuda has the shortest winter dormancy of all hybrid bermudas, staying green longer into the fall and greening up earlier in the spring. It is the best bermuda for coastal California. With its great durability, beautiful dark-green color, and recuperative abilities, Tifway II is a top performer on golf courses and sports fields.
California’s only certified bermuda
TifSport was developed by USDA/ARS geneticist Dr. Wayne Hanna at the University of Georgia Coastal Plains Experiment Station in Tifton, GA. This is the same breeding program initiated by Dr. Glenn Burton, the program responsible for Tifgreen, Tifdwarf, Tifway 419, Tifway II, and TifEagle.
Dr. Hanna and his team set out to develop a new bermuda with superior pest and disease resistance, and greater cold tolerance than other bermudas. TifSport is the result.
TifSport is also certified in California for genetic for purity.
PALMETTO St. AUGUSTINE
The solution for shady situations
St. Augustine is the most shade tolerant of all warm-season grasses. We offer “Palmetto,” a semi-dwarf variety noted for its exceptional cold tolerance and extended growing season. Its deep root system provides superior drought and heat tolerance. The dark-green color and medium-fine blade delivers exceptional uniformity under a wide range of light conditions. It has a coarse texture with a soft blade. Palmetto will go dormant in the cooler winter months, and should not be overseeded.
